The Real Truth

Family notes and reflections — honest words about where we come from, what we carried, and what we are learning to set down.

Dear Younger Self

Dear younger self,

Dear Little Billy,

You don't have to be responsible for everyone's happiness. You don't have to understand why grown-ups do the things they do.

You are a little boy. Go play. Get dirty. Build something that doesn't work. Take it apart. Put it back together. Ask too many questions. Laugh too loudly. Be curious.

You are not “too much.” You are not broken. You are not strange because your mind works differently. Your curiosity is not a defect.

And Billy… You don't have to become useful before you deserve love. You don't have to accomplish something to earn your place at the table. You don't have to be perfect. You don't have to fix everybody. And when somebody is angry, disappointed, confused, or hurting… you are not automatically the reason.

Sometimes grown-ups have problems that belong entirely to grown-ups. Let them carry them.

And one more thing: When you grow up, you are going to spend a lot of time trying to go back and fix things.

You can't.

But you can stop carrying them. There will be days when you feel ashamed of things you didn't know how to handle. There will be days when you think you should have done more.

Be careful, Billy. That's the old voice. You did the best you could with what you knew.
